Prosecuting Attorney Jason Holdren announced today’s sentencing of Richard Allen Hurt, 47, of Bidwell, Ohio. “Today Richard Hurt was sentenced by Judge Margaret Evans to maximum consecutive sentences for his recent convictions of Gross Abuse of a Corpse, a felony of the fifth degree, and Tampering with Evidence a felony of the third degree,“ stated Holdren. Hurt was sentenced to a total of four years in prison for his part in the disposal of the body of Jessica Berry.
Holdren argued for the maximum sentences on these charges, but acknowledged that the sentence does not fit Hurt’s actions in this case.
“I am pleased that Mr. Hurt received the maximum sentence permitted under Ohio law but am outraged that the maximum penalty for dismembering a body is only 12 months in prison,” Holdren said. “I stand with our community and the family of the victim, and I urge our legislature to enhance the penalty for this type of conduct.”
The Gallia County Prosecutor’s Office has been in contact with State Representative Ryan Smith to address this issue.
